Urban Development Bank
Full Form of UDB
What is UDB?
Urban Development Bank, commonly abbreviated as UDB, refers to a specialised financial institution that focuses on providing credit and banking services for urban infrastructure and development projects. In India, UDBs play a crucial role in financing housing, sanitation, water supply, road networks, and other essential urban amenities, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. These banks channel funds into municipal projects, support local self-governance initiatives, and collaborate with state governments to upgrade civic infrastructure. UDBs operate under the regulatory framework of the Reserve Bank of India and are often promoted by state governments to bridge the urban-rural development gap. They extend loans to urban local bodies, housing cooperatives, and small entrepreneurs engaged in city-based trades and services. The concept gained traction in India during the economic liberalisation period when rapid urbanisation necessitated focused financial intervention. Students preparing for banking, civil services, and public administration examinations should familiarise themselves with UDB's functions, as questions on development banking and urban financing mechanisms appear regularly in exams conducted by RBI, NABARD, and UPSC.
