What is UBV?
The Ultraviolet-Blue-Visible (UBV) photometric system, also widely known as the Johnson photometric system, is a fundamental classification scheme used in observational astronomy. Developed by American astronomer Harold Lester Johnson in the 1950s, the system measures the brightness of celestial objects through three specific filters centred on the ultraviolet, blue, and visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. By analysing the differences in magnitudes recorded across these bands, astronomers can accurately determine stellar temperature, spectral classification, colour indices, and the amount of interstellar extinction along the line of sight.
