Urea Breath Test
Full Form of UBT
What is UBT?
The Urea Breath Test (UBT) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria in the stomach lining. H. pylori is one of the leading causes of peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, and stomach cancer worldwide, and India reports a particularly high prevalence of this infection due to dietary patterns, crowded living conditions, and limited access to clean water in some regions. During the test, the patient swallows a capsule containing urea labelled with a non-radioactive carbon-13 isotope; if H. pylori is present, the bacteria break down the urea and release labelled carbon dioxide, which is then measured in the patient's breath sample. UBT is widely available across Indian hospitals, gastroenterology clinics, and diagnostic chains such as Thyrocare, SRL, and Metropolis. Doctors in India commonly recommend UBT for patients suffering from recurring acidity, bloating, or unexplained stomach pain, and also use it to confirm whether H. pylori eradication therapy has been successful. For NEET PG, AIIMS, and other medical entrance exam aspirants, understanding the principle, sensitivity, and clinical applications of UBT is essential.
