Union of Arab Republics

What is UAR?

The Union of Arab Republics was a short-lived political federation formed on February 1, 1958, originally comprising Egypt and Syria, with the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen (North Yemen) joining as a member state later that same year. It was conceived as a pan-Arab nationalist project championed by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, whose vision was to unite the Arab world under a single sovereign political entity. Cairo served as the federal capital, and the tricolour red, white, and black flag of the UAR with the eagle of Saladin became an enduring symbol of Arab unity. However, deep-rooted political tensions, conflicting interests between Egyptian and Syrian military officers, and resentment over Nasser's centralised control led to Syria's withdrawal in September 1961, effectively dissolving the union. Egypt continued to officially use the name United Arab Republic until 1971, when it was renamed the Arab Republic of Egypt. The UAR remains an important case study in Indian civil services, political science, and modern history syllabi, frequently appearing in UPSC General Studies papers as an example of attempted regional integration.
