Udyam Aadhar Memorandum

What is UAM?

The Udyam Aadhar Memorandum, popularly known as UAM, is an official registration document issued to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises across India. Introduced by the Ministry of MSME, it serves as a single-page certificate that recognises a business as a registered MSME under the Government of India framework. Earlier known as the Udyog Aadhar Memorandum, the scheme was revamped in 2020 and is now integrated with the Udyam Registration portal, providing a twelve-digit unique identification number called the Udyam Registration Number. Small business owners, shopkeepers, manufacturers, service providers, and traders use UAM to avail themselves of numerous benefits including priority lending from banks, lower interest rates, government tender preferences, subsidies, and protection against delayed payments. The registration is free of cost, paperless, and based on self-declaration through Aadhaar authentication, making it highly accessible to first-generation entrepreneurs in tier-two and tier-three cities. For competitive exam aspirants, understanding UAM is important under the general knowledge, economy, and government schemes sections of exams like UPSC, SSC, banking, and state PSCs, where questions on MSME classification frequently appear.
