Technology Upgradation Programme
Full Form of TUP
What is TUP?
The Technology Upgradation Programme, commonly abbreviated as TUP, is a Government of India initiative designed to help domestic industries, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises, modernise their production infrastructure and adopt contemporary manufacturing practices. The programme was conceived to address the problem of outdated machinery and low productivity that affects the competitiveness of Indian MSMEs in both domestic and global markets. It provides eligible manufacturing units with capital subsidies, concessional credit, and technical guidance to replace obsolete equipment with energy-efficient and digitally integrated alternatives. TUP is especially relevant for labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, food processing, leather, and engineering, where small firms often lack the capital to invest in upgrades independently. Implementation is carried out through the Ministry of MSME along with state industrial development corporations, SIDBI, and various scheduled commercial banks acting as nodal channels for disbursal. By strengthening manufacturing capacity, the programme supports the wider Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals of building a self-reliant industrial economy. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, banking, or state public service examinations, awareness of TUP and similar government industrial schemes is important, as questions on welfare and development programmes frequently appear in the general studies, economy, and current affairs sections.
