Tiger Reserve Zone

What is TRZ?

A Tiger Reserve Zone (TRZ) refers to a legally designated protected area in India that is specifically demarcated for the conservation of wild tigers and their natural habitat. The concept gained formal structure through the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and was further strengthened by the launch of Project Tiger in 1973 by the Government of India. The country currently has more than fifty tiger reserves spread across states such as Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu, covering diverse forest ecosystems. Each tiger reserve is divided into a core zone where human activity is strictly restricted and a surrounding buffer zone that allows regulated use and supports local forest-dependent communities. The National Tiger Conservation Authority oversees the management and periodic all-India tiger population estimation exercises. India is home to nearly seventy-five percent of the global wild tiger population, making TRZs extremely significant for biodiversity conservation. These zones also promote regulated eco-tourism and provide employment to nearby villages. Questions on tiger reserves frequently appear in UPSC, SSC, and state forest service examinations.
