Trans-Pacific Partnership
Full Form of TPP
What is TPP?
The Trans-Pacific Partnership, commonly known as the TPP, was a multilateral free trade agreement originally negotiated between twelve Pacific Rim countries including the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Singapore, and others, aimed at reducing tariffs, harmonising trade rules, and boosting economic integration across the Asia-Pacific region. In India, the TPP is studied primarily in the context of international trade policy, foreign relations, and its implications for India's export competitiveness in markets like Japan, Vietnam, and Malaysia, none of which have free trade agreements with New Delhi. The agreement gained significant attention in 2017 when the United States withdrew, leading to its renaming as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). For Indian students and aspirants, TPP is a recurring topic in UPSC Civil Services, especially in General Studies papers on economy and international affairs, as well as in commerce and management entrance examinations where questions on global trade blocs are frequently asked.
