Total Parenteral Nutrition
Full Form of TPN
What is TPN?
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is a medical technique used to provide complete nutritional support to patients who cannot eat or absorb nutrients through their normal digestive system. In this method, a specially formulated solution containing carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes is delivered directly into the bloodstream through a central or peripheral vein, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract entirely. TPN is widely used in Indian hospitals, particularly in intensive care units, surgical wards, and neonatal care departments, for patients suffering from conditions such as severe malnutrition, intestinal obstruction, short bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, and post-major surgical complications. It is also commonly administered to premature newborns in NICUs across major Indian hospitals like AIIMS, Apollo, and Fortis. TPN requires careful monitoring by a team of doctors, dietitians, and pharmacists to prevent complications like infections, liver dysfunction, and metabolic imbalances. For medical students preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS, or JIPMER exams, understanding TPN protocols, indications, and complications forms an important part of clinical nutrition chapters.
