What is TOW?
TOW stands for Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided, which is one of the most widely used anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) systems in the world. Developed originally by the United States in the 1960s, the TOW missile is a heavy weapon designed to destroy armoured vehicles, bunkers, and fortified positions. In India, the Indian Army operates TOW missiles mounted on BMP-2 Sarath infantry combat vehicles and on attack helicopters such as the Rudra and the recently inducted Apache AH-64E. The weapon works through a wire-guidance system where the operator tracks the target optically and the missile receives correction signals through thin wires that spool out as it flies, allowing for high precision even at ranges exceeding three kilometres. The TOW has seen combat use in numerous conflicts globally and remains a key anti-armour asset.
