Tolerance
Full Form of TOL
What is TOL?
Tolerance in engineering refers to the permissible limit or range of variation allowed in a physical dimension, property, or measured value of a manufactured component. It is a fundamental concept in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and quality control, allowing producers to create parts that fit and function correctly despite minor variations during production. In India, tolerance is widely applied across the automotive sector, aerospace industry, and heavy machinery manufacturing, with major industrial hubs in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, and the National Capital Region relying heavily on standardized tolerance specifications. Engineering students regularly study tolerance concepts in subjects like engineering drawing, production technology, metrology, and quality assurance during their diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses. The Bureau of Indian Standards along with ISO frameworks guide tolerance practices across Indian industries. This concept regularly appears in competitive examinations such as GATE, SSC JE, RRB JE, and various state public service commission tests, where questions on limits, fits, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing are commonly asked.
