Take Home Ration

What is THR?

THR or Take Home Ration is a supplementary nutrition component delivered under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, one of India's largest flagship programmes for child and maternal welfare. It provides fortified, energy-dense food items such as wheat flour, soya-based mixes, millets, pulses, and ready-to-eat preparations to children aged six months to three years, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. The food is meant to be prepared and consumed at home, complementing the hot cooked meals served daily at Anganwadi centres across the country. THR plays a vital role in addressing malnutrition, anaemia, and stunting, which remain serious public health concerns, especially in rural, tribal, and economically weaker regions. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in partnership with state governments and UT administrations, with monthly rations distributed through Anganwadi workers. THR is a frequently asked topic in UPSC, SSC, state PSC, and other competitive examinations covering Indian social welfare and development programmes.
