Temperature-Humidity Index
Full Form of THI
What is THI?
The Temperature-Humidity Index, commonly abbreviated as THI, is a numerical value that combines air temperature and relative humidity to estimate the level of heat stress experienced by living beings, particularly dairy cattle. It is calculated using a standardized formula that merges ambient temperature in degrees Celsius with humidity percentage to give a single readable score. In India, THI plays a critical role in the dairy sector, which is one of the largest in the world, because high THI values indicate severe heat stress that reduces milk yield, affects animal reproduction, and can even lead to mortality in extreme cases. The index is widely used by veterinarians, dairy farm managers, and agricultural researchers across states like Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, where dairy farming is a primary livelihood for millions. Meteorologists also refer to THI while issuing heat advisories for both animals and humans during the harsh Indian summer months. Bodies like NDRI and ICAR regularly publish THI-based guidelines to help farmers adopt cooling and shade management strategies. For students, THI is an important topic in agricultural science, veterinary science, and environmental science examinations conducted by ICAR, ASRB, and various state agricultural universities across the country.
