What is TEJ?

TEJ stands for Technology Enabled Judiciary, a transformative initiative under India's broader mission to digitize and modernize the judicial system. The programme aims to leverage advanced information technology, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure to streamline court processes, significantly reduce the massive case backlogs, and improve overall access to justice for citizens across the country. Under the TEJ framework, various digital tools such as e-filing systems, virtual hearing platforms, digital case management software, and AI-assisted legal research portals are being deployed across High Courts, District Courts, and subordinate judiciary. The initiative is closely linked to the e-Courts Project, which is being implemented in multiple phases with active support from the Government of India and the Supreme Court. TEJ plays a particularly important role in rural and semi-urban areas where physical access to courts is limited, allowing litigants, lawyers, and judges to participate in proceedings remotely through video conferencing.
