Tick-Borne Encephalitis
Full Form of TBE
What is TBE?
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a serious viral infection that affects the central nervous system, transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected ticks belonging to the Ixodes species. The causative agent is the tick-borne encephalitis virus, a flavivirus that can cause a spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from mild febrile illness to severe encephalitis, meningitis, or meningoencephalitis. In India, TBE has been documented in certain forested and tribal regions, particularly in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and some parts of the northeast, where tick populations thrive and outdoor exposure is common. The disease is more prevalent in parts of Europe and Central Asia, but Indian epidemiological studies have highlighted its presence among forest workers, villagers, and tribal communities. Diagnosis relies on serological testing to detect virus-specific IgM antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment is largely supportive as no specific antiviral therapy exists, making prevention through tick-bite avoidance, protective clothing, and vaccination crucial for high-risk groups. TBE is a relevant topic for medical students preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS, and other competitive examinations.
