Transcatheter Aortic Valve
Full Form of TAV
What is TAV?
Transcatheter Aortic Valve, commonly abbreviated as TAV, refers to a minimally invasive medical procedure used to replace a damaged or diseased aortic valve in the heart. It serves as a vital alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, particularly for elderly patients or those considered high-risk for conventional surgical valve replacement due to other health complications. In India, TAV has gained significant traction over the past decade, with leading cardiac hospitals in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad performing hundreds of these procedures every year. The technique involves threading a thin catheter, usually through the femoral artery in the groin, to deliver a bioprosthetic replacement valve to the heart without opening the chest cavity. It is primarily recommended to treat severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve narrows and restricts normal blood flow from the heart. Indian cardiologists often use the related terms TAVR and TAVI interchangeably with TAV. For medical students preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS, or PGI entrance exams, understanding TAV procedures and their clinical indications is becoming increasingly important as interventional cardiology expands rapidly across the country.
