Technical Advisory Group
Full Form of TAG
What is TAG?
A Technical Advisory Group, commonly referred to as TAG, is a panel of subject-matter experts constituted to provide specialised guidance on technical, scientific, or policy matters. In India, TAGs are frequently set up by central ministries, public sector undertakings, regulatory bodies, and inter-ministerial committees to evaluate proposals, review standards, and recommend courses of action on complex issues. Their role typically involves scrutinising technical data, advising on the adoption of new technologies, and assisting in drafting policy frameworks or guidelines. TAGs are widely used in sectors such as telecommunications, health, environment, finance, and infrastructure planning. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Reserve Bank of India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and various state governments have all relied on TAGs at different times. Members are usually drawn from academia, industry, and retired government officials with relevant domain expertise. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, banking, or public administration exams, understanding the structure and function of such advisory bodies is a recurring part of polity, governance, and general studies syllabi.
