Terminal Aerodrome Forecast
Full Form of TAF
What is TAF?
A Terminal Aerodrome Forecast, commonly abbreviated as TAF, is a standardized weather forecast format issued specifically for the area within a five-kilometre radius of an airport runway. In India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) prepares and releases TAFs for major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, covering a forecast period of 24 to 30 hours. These forecasts provide critical meteorological details such as surface wind speed and direction, prevailing visibility, significant weather phenomena like thunderstorms or fog, cloud cover at various altitudes, and expected temperature changes. Pilots, air traffic controllers, and airline dispatchers depend on TAFs to plan flight routes, calculate fuel requirements, and identify alternate landing destinations when conditions deteriorate. TAFs are refreshed every six hours and conform to international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, ensuring uniform interpretation across global aviation operations. For Indian students preparing for competitive examinations such as AFCAT, UPSC, or pilot licensing assessments, familiarity with TAF codes and decoding formats is valuable, as questions on aviation meteorology regularly feature in technical sections.
