Sub-Zero Celsius
Full Form of SZC
What is SZC?
Sub-Zero Celsius refers to any temperature reading that falls below 0 degrees on the Celsius temperature scale, indicating conditions colder than the freezing point of water. In India, SZC conditions are most frequently reported in the northern hill regions including Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand, particularly between December and February. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regularly issues bulletins highlighting SZC conditions, alerting residents about frostbite hazards, frozen water supply lines, and damage to horticulture crops like apple orchards. Beyond weather reporting, the term plays an important role in India's expanding cold chain logistics sector, which transports vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and perishable food products that demand strict temperature-controlled environments. Defence personnel deployed at high-altitude posts in Siachen, Kargil, and eastern Ladakh routinely operate under SZC conditions and rely on specialised gear. The acronym occasionally appears in competitive examinations such as UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions within geography, general science, and current affairs sections.
