Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim
Full Form of SXT
What is SXT?
SXT stands for Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim, a widely prescribed fixed-dose combination antibiotic in India that works by blocking two consecutive steps in the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway. Marketed under popular brand names like Septran, Bactrim, and Ciplin, this combination is available in tablet, syrup, and injectable forms across Indian pharmacies. Doctors commonly prescribe it for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, traveller's diarrhoea, typhoid fever, pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in HIV patients, and certain skin infections. It plays a significant role in India's public health programmes, particularly for opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. The drug is included in standard pharmacology and community medicine syllabi of MBBS, BDS, and pharmacy courses across Indian universities. Pharmacy students preparing for GPAT, NIPER, and state PSC exams must memorise its mechanism, dose, side effects like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and contraindications during pregnancy.
