State Waqf Board
Full Form of SWB
What is SWB?
The State Waqf Board is a statutory body established under the Waqf Act of 1995 in every Indian state to manage, supervise, and regulate the affairs of Waqf properties within its jurisdiction. Waqf refers to a permanent dedication of movable or immovable property for religious, charitable, or pious purposes as recognised under Muslim personal law in India. Each State Waqf Board functions under the overall supervision of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, and is responsible for ensuring that Waqf estates are properly maintained, utilised for their intended charitable purposes, and protected from encroachment or misuse. The Board maintains updated records of all Waqf properties, conducts periodic surveys, and initiates legal action against illegal occupation. State Waqf Boards also play an important role in safeguarding the religious and cultural heritage of the Muslim community across the country. The Central Waqf Council coordinates the functioning of all State Waqf Boards. Questions regarding the structure, powers, and jurisdiction of State Waqf Boards regularly appear in competitive examinations such as UPSC Civil Services, state PSCs, and law entrance tests.
