What is SVZ?
The Sub Ventricular Zone, commonly abbreviated as SVZ, is a thin layer of tissue lining the lateral ventricles of the brain that contains a high concentration of neural stem cells and progenitor cells. It is one of the primary sites of adult neurogenesis in mammals, where new neurons are continuously generated and migrate along the rostral migratory stream to the olfactory bulb. In India, research on the SVZ is actively pursued at premier medical and neuroscience institutions such as AIIMS Delhi, NIMHANS Bangalore, the Indian Institute of Science, and several IITs with active biology departments. Studies focus on its role in brain repair following stroke, traumatic injury, and neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The SVZ is also studied in the context of gliomas, since brain tumours often originate from stem cells in this region. Medical students preparing for NEET PG, INI-CET, and other competitive examinations frequently encounter the term while studying neuroanatomy and neurobiology, as questions on adult neurogenesis and brain anatomy regularly appear in these tests.
