State Vehicle Inspection
Full Form of SVI
What is SVI?
State Vehicle Inspection, commonly referred to as SVI, is the official process through which motor vehicles in India are examined and certified for roadworthiness by authorized government agencies. In India, this inspection is primarily conducted at designated testing stations operated by the State Transport Department or authorized agencies under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and its subsequent amendments. The process involves a thorough examination of critical vehicle components including brakes, headlights, indicators, tyres, steering mechanism, suspension, exhaust emissions, horn, and overall structural integrity to ensure compliance with prescribed safety and pollution standards. Vehicles that successfully pass the SVI are issued a fitness certificate, which is mandatory for commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, and taxis, as well as older private vehicles beyond fifteen years of age, to operate legally on Indian roads. The inspection is typically carried out at automated or semi-automated testing stations set up by various state governments in collaboration with the central Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. For students preparing for competitive examinations such as SSC, UPSC, or state public service commissions, understanding SVI and related transport terminology is important as questions frequently appear on road safety regulations, motor vehicle laws, and the role of transport authorities.
