What is SUJ?
Sukhamritam Yojana (SUJ) is a centrally sponsored welfare scheme launched by the Government of India to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities and improve the socio-economic well-being of underprivileged families across rural and semi-urban regions. The scheme focuses on skill training, financial assistance, and self-employment generation, particularly targeting women, marginal farmers, and daily-wage workers. SUJ operates through district-level implementing agencies in partnership with state governments, NABARD, and various NGOs. Beneficiaries receive handholding support for at least 18 months, including market linkage assistance and access to micro-credit facilities. The scheme has gained traction in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan where socio-economic indicators remain challenging. SUJ aims to reduce distress migration by creating local employment clusters around agriculture, dairy, handicrafts, and small-scale manufacturing. For competitive exams, questions on SUJ appear in sections covering government schemes, rural development, and social welfare programmes, making it relevant for UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs.
