State Transport Undertaking
Full Form of STU
What is STU?
State Transport Undertaking (STU) refers to the government-owned public bus transport services operated by individual Indian states. These undertakings are established under the Road Transport Corporations Act of 1950 and function as either state-level or city-level entities responsible for providing affordable road transport to the public. In India, every state has its own STU, which operates intercity, intracity, and rural bus services connecting towns, villages, and metropolitan regions. Well-known examples include DTC in Delhi, BMTC in Bangalore, BEST in Mumbai, and KSRTC in Karnataka. STUs play a crucial role in India's public transport network, carrying millions of passengers daily, especially migrant workers, students, and daily commuters who depend on subsidised fares. The undertakings also serve remote and economically weaker regions where private operators rarely venture, making them essential for social inclusion. In competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs, questions about STUs frequently appear under topics like public administration, Indian economy, and government schemes, making it a useful term for general studies preparation.
