Science and Technology Studies
Full Form of STS
What is STS?
Science and Technology Studies, commonly abbreviated as STS, is an interdisciplinary academic field that examines how science, technology, and society interact with one another. It brings together subjects like sociology, history, philosophy, political science, and engineering to understand the social, cultural, ethical, and political dimensions of scientific and technological developments. In India, STS is offered as a postgraduate and research programme in several universities including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, JNU, and IISc Bangalore, often under departments of humanities and social sciences. The discipline is important for understanding the impact of technology on Indian society, government policy making, and ethical concerns around emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology. STS scholars in India often work on themes like indigenous knowledge systems, public health technology, agricultural innovation, and digital governance. The field is increasingly relevant for candidates preparing for UPSC civil services and UGC NET examinations, as it bridges the gap between technical knowledge and social science perspectives, making it a valuable area of study in the contemporary Indian educational landscape.
