What is SPO2?
SPO2, or Peripheral Capillary Oxygen Saturation, is a non-invasive measurement of the oxygen level in the blood, typically obtained using a pulse oximeter. This device clips onto a finger or earlobe and uses light absorption to estimate the percentage of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen. In India, SPO2 monitoring became a household essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, as silent hypoxia often went unnoticed without it. It is widely used in hospitals for anesthesia monitoring, intensive care, and management of respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, and pneumonia. The normal SPO2 range is 95-100% for healthy individuals; levels below 90% are considered hypoxemic and require immediate medical intervention. Pulse oximeters are affordable and available across Indian pharmacies and online platforms, making home monitoring accessible even in rural areas. Government health initiatives have also promoted their use for early detection of respiratory distress. However, factors like dark nail polish, poor peripheral perfusion, or motion artifacts can affect accuracy. SPO2 is a core topic in Indian medical entrance exams (NEET, AIIMS) and nursing assessments, emphasizing its clinical significance. It remains a vital sign alongside pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate in both emergency and routine care.
