State Planning Board
Full Form of SPB
What is SPB?
The State Planning Board, commonly abbreviated as SPB, is a statutory or administrative body constituted by various state governments in India to prepare, coordinate, and monitor the five-year plans, annual plans, and other developmental programmes within the state. It functions under the chairpersonship of the Chief Minister or a designated minister, with senior bureaucrats, economists, and subject experts as members. The SPB plays a crucial advisory role in allocating resources across sectors such as agriculture, industry, infrastructure, health, and education, while ensuring balanced regional development. In India, almost every major state, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, has its own State Planning Board. After the abolition of the central Planning Commission in 2015 and its replacement by NITI Aayog, several state planning boards have also been restructured to align with cooperative federalism. The concept is frequently featured in UPSC Civil Services, state PSC, and economics-related competitive examinations, making it an important topic for aspirants preparing for Indian governance and public policy questions.
