Small Modular Reactor
Full Form of SMR
What is SMR?
SMR stands for Small Modular Reactor, which refers to advanced nuclear reactors that are compact in design compared to traditional large-scale nuclear power plants. These reactors typically have a capacity of up to 300 MW per unit and can be factory-manufactured as modular components before being transported and assembled at the deployment site. In India, SMRs have become a key focus area as the country aims to expand its clean and sustainable nuclear energy portfolio to meet the rising electricity demand and achieve the target of net-zero emissions by 2070. The Department of Atomic Energy along with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is actively working on developing indigenous SMR technology for use in heavy industries, hydrogen production, desalination plants, and district heating systems across the country. States like Haryana, Gujarat, and Punjab are being considered as potential sites for the first wave of SMR installations. For competitive examinations, SMR is a frequently asked topic in sections covering nuclear energy, climate policy, and sustainable technology, especially in UPSC, SSC, and engineering entrance exams.
