Sonic Hedgehog
Full Form of SHH
What is SHH?
SHH stands for Sonic Hedgehog, which is the name given to an important signaling protein and the gene that encodes it in mammals. Discovered in the early 1990s as part of the hedgehog signaling pathway, SHH plays a critical role in embryonic development, particularly in the patterning of the nervous system, limbs, eyes, and various other organs. In India, SHH is widely studied in medical and biological research institutions, with significant relevance to understanding birth defects such as holoprosencephaly, neural tube disorders, and certain cancers including basal cell carcinoma and medulloblastoma. Researchers across IITs, AIIMS, IISERs, and various CSIR labs actively investigate SHH pathway inhibitors for therapeutic applications in oncology and regenerative medicine. Medical and life science students in India frequently encounter SHH in subjects like biochemistry, genetics, and developmental biology during their MBBS, BDS, MSc, and PhD programs. Questions about hedgehog signaling pathways often appear in competitive exams like NEET, CSIR NET, ICMR JRF, and DBT-JRF, making it an important topic for aspirants preparing for these examinations.
