Small Form-factor Pluggable
Full Form of SFP
What is SFP?
SFP stands for Small Form-factor Pluggable, a compact, hot-swappable transceiver module widely used in networking and telecommunications equipment. It plugs into a dedicated SFP slot on switches, routers, and other network devices, allowing flexible connections over fibre optic or copper cabling. In India, SFP modules are deployed extensively across the IT, telecom, and data centre sectors, supporting the rapid expansion of broadband, 4G, 5G, and enterprise networking infrastructure nationwide. Indian ISPs, BPO firms, financial institutions, and even government networks rely on SFP modules for high-speed and reliable data transmission across both short and long distances. SFPs are available in multiple variants such as SX, LX, ZX, and copper models, supporting speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, while the upgraded SFP+ versions handle 10 Gbps connections. Engineering students pursuing electronics, computer science, or telecommunications courses frequently study SFP technology as part of their networking curriculum. It also appears in competitive exams like GATE, UGC-NET, and various PSU recruitment tests in the telecommunications and networking domain.
