Retinoid X Receptor
Full Form of RXR
What is RXR?
Retinoid X Receptor, commonly abbreviated as RXR, is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of proteins that function as ligand-activated transcription factors regulating the expression of specific genes. It plays a central role in mediating the biological effects of retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, and is involved in diverse physiological processes including cell differentiation, embryonic development, metabolism, and immune response. RXR is unique because it can form heterodimers with many other nuclear receptors, making it a critical partner in gene regulation pathways throughout the body. In India, RXR is a frequent topic in advanced pharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular biology coursework offered in medical, pharmacy, and life science programmes. Researchers at institutions such as AIIMS, IISc, and IITs study RXR signalling to understand cancer, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. It also appears in the syllabus of competitive exams like CSIR-NET, GATE (Biotechnology), and PGIMER entrance tests, where questions on nuclear receptor signalling pathways are commonly asked.
