Prescription Generic
Full Form of RXG
What is RXG?
RXG stands for Prescription Generic, a term widely used in Indian pharmacy and medical practice to refer to generic medicines that are dispensed against a valid medical prescription. In India, where the cost of healthcare remains a major concern for millions of families, RXG plays a crucial role in making essential medicines affordable and accessible to the common person. The Government of India actively promotes the use of generic medicines through the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), which operates thousands of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country offering quality generic drugs at significantly lower prices than their branded counterparts. The concept of RXG is particularly relevant in government hospitals, primary health centres, and private pharmacies where pharmacists are encouraged to suggest generic alternatives to expensive branded medicines while maintaining the same therapeutic efficacy. The Medical Council of India and Pharmacy Council of India have issued guidelines urging doctors to prescribe generic medicines. Pharmacy and medical students frequently encounter the RXG concept during their pharmacology and clinical pharmacy training, making it an important topic for competitive exams like NEET PG, GPAT, and state-level pharmacy entrance tests.
