Rashtriya Vayoshreshtha Yojana
Full Form of RVY
What is RVY?
The Rashtriya Vayoshreshtha Yojana (RVY) is a flagship welfare scheme launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, to honour and empower senior citizens aged 60 years and above. The scheme recognises the contributions of elderly persons in various fields and provides financial assistance, aids, and assistive devices to improve their quality of life. Instituted in 1999, the RVY celebrates the wisdom and experience of older Indians by conferring national awards in categories like lifetime achievement, sports, art, culture, social work, and bravery. The scheme is particularly relevant in India where the elderly population is growing rapidly, and many senior citizens face economic and health challenges. Awards are presented annually on International Day of Older Persons, observed on 1st October each year. The yojana also distributes aids and appliances such as walking sticks, hearing aids, and wheelchairs to indigent elders below the poverty line. State governments play an active role in identifying deserving senior citizens and forwarding their nominations. From an exam perspective, RVY frequently appears in questions related to social welfare schemes, ministry portfolios, and government initiatives for vulnerable groups in UPSC, SSC, and state-level competitive examinations across India.
