Retinal Vein Occlusion
Full Form of RVO
What is RVO?
Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) is a common eye disorder in which one of the veins carrying blood away from the retina gets blocked, leading to sudden painless vision loss in the affected eye. It is considered the second most common cause of retinal vascular blindness after diabetic retinopathy. RVO is broadly classified into two main types, namely Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) and Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO), depending on which retinal vein is obstructed. In India, the condition is increasingly being diagnosed due to rising cases of hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis among the adult population. Common risk factors include advanced age, uncontrolled blood pressure, high cholesterol, glaucoma, and smoking. Patients typically present with blurred vision, floaters, or a dark spot appearing suddenly in one eye. Diagnosis is confirmed through fundus examination, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography. Treatment options offered in Indian hospitals include anti-VEGF injections, corticosteroids, and laser photocoagulation. This topic is frequently covered in NEET-PG, AIIMS PG, and other postgraduate medical entrance examinations in India.
