Rourkela Steel Plant
Full Form of RSP
What is RSP?
RSP stands for Rourkela Steel Plant, which holds the distinction of being the first integrated steel plant in the Indian public sector established with foreign collaboration. Set up in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from Germany, the plant is situated in Rourkela, in the Sundargarh district of Odisha. Operated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), RSP has been a cornerstone of India's industrial growth for more than six decades and remains one of the country's largest producers of flat steel products. The facility manufactures a wide range of items including hot rolled coils, plates, sheets, and pig iron, which serve key sectors such as construction, automotive, and infrastructure development. Beyond production, RSP is among the largest employers in Odisha, generating direct and indirect livelihood for thousands of families and contributing significantly to the regional economy. For students preparing for competitive examinations like SSC, UPSC, and banking, awareness of major PSUs and steel units such as RSP and SAIL often features in the general knowledge and current affairs sections. The acronym RSP is widely used in government reports, industrial communications, and Indian news media.
