Residential Quarters Wing
Full Form of RQW
What is RQW?
The Residential Quarters Wing, commonly abbreviated as RQW, is an internal administrative unit that exists in many Indian government departments, public sector undertakings, and large civic bodies. Its primary role is to manage the allotment, maintenance, and overall supervision of residential quarters provided to serving and retired government employees across the country. The wing handles day-to-day housing matters such as processing accommodation applications, maintaining seniority-based waiting lists, calculating licence fees, processing transfer-linked housing requests, and coordinating repairs or renovations of existing quarters. In large establishments like Indian Railways, defence organisations, central ministries, banks, and PSUs such as SAIL or BHEL, the RQW supports the welfare of lakhs of employees and their families who depend on government housing. Officers working in this wing also liaise with the Directorate of Estates and CPWD on policy matters. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC CGL, and state PSC examinations, awareness of internal organisational units like the RQW is useful in general studies papers dealing with public administration and government functioning.
