Reduced Pressure Zone
Full Form of RPZ
What is RPZ?
Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) is a specialized backflow prevention device used in plumbing and water distribution systems to protect potable water supplies from contamination. It operates by maintaining a pressure differential between two independent check valves, creating a zone of reduced pressure in the middle that drains out any contaminated water, preventing it from flowing back into the clean water supply. In India, RPZ valves are increasingly being mandated in commercial buildings, hospitals, industrial facilities, and high-rise residential complexes by municipal water authorities and the Bureau of Indian Standards. They are commonly installed where there is a risk of cross-connection between potable and non-potable water sources, such as in fire suppression systems, irrigation networks, and chemical processing plants. The Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) recommends RPZ assemblies in critical installations. Engineering students preparing for civil, mechanical, or environmental engineering examinations often study RPZ valves as part of water supply and sanitary engineering topics, making it a relevant term for competitive exams like GATE, UPSC, and various state public service commissions.
