Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Jayanti
Full Form of RPJ
What is RPJ?
Rashtriya Panchayati Raj Jayanti, commonly referred to as RPJ, is National Panchayati Raj Day observed every year on 24th April across India. The day commemorates the historic moment when the Panchayati Raj system was formally introduced in 1959 following the recommendation of the Balwant Rai Mehta Committee, which laid the foundation for decentralised governance at the village level. In 1992, the 73rd Constitutional Amendment gave Panchayats a constitutional status, making them the third tier of governance in the Indian democratic framework. On this day, the Government of India organises national-level events, conferences, and award ceremonies to honour outstanding Panchayats through the prestigious National Panchayat Awards. The day is also used to highlight the role of elected representatives in rural development, women empowerment, and grassroots planning through schemes like MGNREGA and the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan. For students preparing for UPSC, SSC, and various state public service examinations, RPJ is an important topic under Indian Polity, particularly within the sections on Local Self Government and Constitutional Amendments.
