What is RNW?

Radio Netherlands Worldwide, commonly abbreviated as RNW, was the international broadcasting division of the Dutch public broadcasting system, originally founded in 1947 as Radio Nederland Wereldomroep. The organisation was headquartered in Hilversum, Netherlands, and produced news, documentaries, and cultural programmes in more than ten languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Tamil, making it a familiar source of international news for Indian listeners, journalists, and language learners for several decades. RNW focused on themes like human rights, press freedom, sexual and reproductive health, and good governance, and its Hindi Service regularly contributed content that was rebroadcast by All India Radio and other Indian outlets. After 2012, RNW transitioned from shortwave radio broadcasting towards digital media and training initiatives for journalists across Africa and Asia. The brand RNW Media continued development work in India with partners working on community radio and citizen journalism. The acronym RNW occasionally appears in Indian mass communication and journalism exam syllabi, especially in modules covering international broadcasting history, and is also useful for UPSC aspirants preparing for media-related general studies questions.
