What is RNC?
Radio Network Controller (RNC) is a critical component in 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) mobile networks that governs the radio access subsystem and manages communication between mobile devices and the core network infrastructure. It performs essential functions like radio resource allocation, mobility management across cells, power control, and encryption of voice and data traffic flowing through the network. In India's rapidly expanding telecom sector, RNCs have played a vital role in supporting hundreds of millions of subscribers on 3G networks operated by companies such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, and BSNL during the late 2000s and early 2010s. The device controls multiple base stations known as Node Bs and handles complex handover procedures when users move across geographic cells, ensuring uninterrupted service. Although 4G LTE and 5G technologies have largely replaced 3G infrastructure in India, telecom engineers and students still study RNC architecture as foundational knowledge in wireless communications. It is frequently referenced in telecommunications engineering curricula at IITs and NITs, competitive exams for PSU telecom positions like BSNL and MTNL JTO, and professional certification programs offered by institutions across the country.
