Ring Main Unit
Full Form of RMU
What is RMU?
A Ring Main Unit, commonly abbreviated as RMU, is a compact, fully sealed piece of electrical switchgear used in secondary distribution networks. It is essentially a factory-assembled unit that integrates switching, protection, and metering functions inside a single stainless steel or metal-enclosed cabinet, typically filled with SF6 gas for insulation. In India, RMUs are widely deployed by state power distribution companies such as BSES, Tata Power Delhi Distribution, Tata Power, Reliance Energy, and various state electricity boards to ensure reliable power supply in urban areas, industrial zones, commercial complexes, residential townships, and metro rail networks. The 'ring main' design allows power to be fed from two different sources, so if one feeder fails or is taken down for maintenance, the load is automatically transferred to the other source without interrupting supply. RMUs are commonly installed in 11kV and 22kV networks and are favoured because they require very little maintenance, occupy minimal space, and offer high safety to operating personnel. For students preparing for GATE, SSC JE, RRB JE, and state electricity board exams, understanding RMU construction, components, and working principles is a frequently tested topic in power systems and switchgear sections.
