Rocket Launcher Unit
Full Form of RLU
What is RLU?
A Rocket Launcher Unit (RLU) is a military formation responsible for operating multiple rocket launcher systems that deliver a large volume of firepower over a wide area. In the Indian Army, RLUs are part of the artillery corps and are equipped with systems like the Pinaka, Grad, or Smerch. They provide indirect fire support during offensive and defensive operations, offering rapid saturation of a target area to suppress enemy positions or create breaches. RLUs are used in both conventional warfare and counter-insurgency roles, especially in mountainous or border regions. The unit is typically organized in battalions or regiments, with each launcher capable of firing multiple rockets in quick succession. In Indian defence exercises, RLUs demonstrate rapid fire capability and area saturation, often integrated with drones for target acquisition. The Pinaka rocket system, indigenously developed by DRDO, is a key asset for Indian RLUs, offering ranges up to 70 km. RLUs undergo rigorous training in mobility, camouflage, and firing drills. Their effectiveness was demonstrated during Operation Parakram and various joint exercises. For competitive exams like CDS or AFCAT, knowledge of RLU may appear in general awareness sections regarding modern weapon systems and artillery modernization. The unit plays a crucial role in enhancing the Army's firepower and strategic deterrence, complementing traditional gun artillery with its unique area-denial capability.
