Right Lower Quadrant
Full Form of RLQ
What is RLQ?
The Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ) of the abdomen is one of the four anatomical quadrants used by clinicians to localize symptoms, pain, and tenderness. It is bounded by the median plane and the transverse umbilical plane on its left and upper sides, respectively. In clinical practice in India, RLQ is most commonly referenced during physical examination for suspected appendicitis, as the appendix typically lies in this region. Other structures in the RLQ include the cecum, ascending colon, part of the small intestine, the right ovary and fallopian tube in females, and the right ureter. Medical students and professionals in India encounter RLQ frequently during MBBS training, NEET PG preparation, and daily ward rounds. Ultrasound and CT scans are often ordered to evaluate RLQ pain. The term is also used in surgical notes, nursing assessments, and medical reporting. For exams like USMLE and Indian PG entrance tests, identification of RLQ anatomy and its clinical correlates is a high-yield topic. A thorough understanding of RLQ helps in differential diagnosis of acute abdomen, gastrointestinal issues, and gynecological conditions.
