Rashtriya Lok Adalat
Full Form of RLA
What is RLA?
Rashtriya Lok Adalat (RLA) is a national-level people's court established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, in India. It operates as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism where pending cases or disputes at the pre-litigation stage are settled amicably and expeditiously. Organized periodically by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in collaboration with state and district legal services authorities, RLAs handle cases related to motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes, land acquisition, labor issues, and other civil and compoundable criminal matters. The awards given by a RLA are final and binding on all parties, with no appeal allowed, making it a cost-effective and time-saving forum. RLAs are held across the country, often on specific dates designated by NALSA, and have successfully resolved millions of cases, reducing the burden on regular courts. For students preparing for judiciary and law entrance exams, understanding the structure and functioning of RLA is crucial as it frequently appears in questions on alternative dispute resolution and legal services. The concept emphasizes the Indian legal system's commitment to accessible justice for all citizens.
