Research and Information System for Developing Countries
Full Form of RIS
What is RIS?
The Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) is an autonomous think tank established by the Government of India under the Ministry of External Affairs. It focuses on policy research in international economic relations, trade, investment, technology, and sustainable development, particularly from the perspective of developing nations. RIS plays a key role in shaping India's foreign economic policy by producing evidence-based studies and organising dialogues with global stakeholders. It is widely used by policymakers, diplomats, and academics in India and abroad. The institute also serves as an advisory body to Indian delegations in multilateral forums such as the World Trade Organization, UNCTAD, and BRICS. For competitive exams like the UPSC Civil Services Examination, knowledge of RIS is important for questions related to India's think tanks, economic diplomacy, and South-South cooperation. Located in New Delhi, RIS regularly publishes journals, policy briefs, and books that contribute to the global discourse on development.
