Rural Infrastructure Index
Full Form of RII
What is RII?
The Rural Infrastructure Index (RII) is a composite metric developed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the Ministry of Rural Development to assess the quality and availability of infrastructure in rural India. It evaluates key indicators such as road connectivity, electrification, drinking water supply, sanitation, health facilities, and educational institutions. The RII is used by state governments and policymakers to identify infrastructure gaps, prioritize funding under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), and monitor progress towards sustainable rural development. It is calculated periodically across districts and states, providing a benchmark for comparison and planning. In competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs, the RII often appears in questions related to rural development, NABARD functions, and government initiatives for infrastructure improvement. Understanding the RII helps candidates analyse the effectiveness of rural policies and the disparities in infrastructure between Indian states.
