What is RIA?
Radioimmunoassay (RIA) is a highly sensitive laboratory technique that uses radioactive isotopes to measure the concentration of antigens or antibodies in a sample. Developed in the 1950s, it revolutionized quantitative analysis in biology and medicine. In India, RIA is employed in hospitals, diagnostic centers, and research institutes, particularly for hormone assays (e.g., thyroid hormones, insulin, cortisol), tumor marker detection, and infectious disease monitoring. The technique is based on the competitive binding between a radioactively labeled antigen and an unlabeled antigen for a limited number of antibody binding sites. Despite the emergence of non-radioactive alternatives like ELISA and CLIA, RIA remains a gold standard for certain endocrine and oncology tests due to its exceptional sensitivity and specificity. It is commonly used in specialized endocrinology labs and nuclear medicine departments across Indian metropolitan and tier-2 cities.
