What is RGI?
The Registrar General of India (RGI) is a senior government official under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, responsible for overseeing the country's census operations, civil registration systems, and demographic data collection. Established in 1961, the RGI’s office plans, executes, and publishes the decennial Census of India, which is the largest administrative exercise in the world involving millions of enumerators. The RGI also manages the Sample Registration System (SRS) to estimate birth and death rates, maternal mortality, and other key health indicators. In addition, the office administers the Civil Registration System (CRS) to ensure timely registration of births and deaths across states and union territories. The RGI plays a critical role in policy formulation by providing authentic demographic data used for resource allocation, electoral delimitation, and implementation of welfare schemes. This position is highly relevant for UPSC and other civil services exams, where questions often cover India’s census methodology, demographic trends, and the constitutional mandate behind the registration of births and deaths.
