Established in 1961, the RGI’s office plans, executes, and publishes the decennial Census of India, which is the largest administrative exercise in the world involving millions of enumerators. The RGI also manages the Sample Registration System (SRS) to estimate birth and death rates, maternal mortality, and other key health indicators. In addition, the office administers the Civil Registration System (CRS) to ensure timely registration of births and deaths across states and union territories. The RGI plays a critical role in policy formulation by providing authentic demographic data used for resource allocation, electoral delimitation, and implementation of welfare schemes.
