Rare Earth Elements
Full Form of REE
What is REE?
Rare Earth Elements (REE) are a set of 17 metallic elements, including the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium, that are essential for modern technology. Despite their name, they are relatively abundant in the Earth's crust but are difficult to extract and process due to their dispersed occurrence. In India, REEs are of strategic importance because the country holds significant reserves, particularly in beach sand deposits along the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. These elements are critical for manufacturing high-tech products such as smartphones, electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, and defense systems like missile guidance. The Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) is the primary government entity responsible for mining and processing these materials. REEs are frequently discussed in Indian competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services under the topics of mineral resources, sustainable development, and geopolitics. Understanding the role of REEs is vital for students of geology, chemistry, and environmental science. The growing global demand for clean energy and electronics has made REE a focus of national policy and international trade negotiations.
